About This Place

Nestled on the vibrant and bustling Newbury Street in Boston, Joe’s on Newbury offers a compelling dive into classic American cuisine with a contemporary twist. This beloved American restaurant, bar & grill, and breakfast/brunch spot has carved out a reputation for delivering hearty, flavorful dishes that brilliantly capture the essence of New England dining.

From the moment you step inside, the energetic ambiance of Joe’s on Newbury sets the stage for a truly satisfying meal. Whether you choose a cozy seat downstairs to escape the street-level buzz or enjoy the lively sidewalk views just steps away, the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between casual comfort and energetic friendliness. The service complements the vibe perfectly—attentive and warm without being intrusive, creating a welcoming space for friends, families, and solo diners alike.

The menu at Joe’s is a celebration of all-American favorites crafted with careful attention to quality and flavor. Seafood lovers will find delight in the Maine Lobster Roll, packed generously with tender lobster meat that bursts with freshness in every bite, or the New England Clam Chowder served in a warm bread bowl—a comforting classic that feels like a hug for the soul. Meanwhile, carnivores can indulge in the robust Cure Burger boasting juicy, perfectly seasoned beef and the 10-Hour Baby Back Ribs, which are fall-off-the-bone tender and glazed with a rich, smoky sauce that lingers delightfully on the palate.

The starters alone set high expectations: Crispy Calamari that Tim Oakley calls "maybe the best I've ever had" arrives golden and flavorful with an ideal crunch, while Joe's Nachos with Chicken and the Buffalo Chicken Dip present perfect shareable bites that mix savory, spicy, and creamy textures. For those seeking a seafood twist, the Ahi Tuna Tartare offers freshness and zing, and the local oysters bring authentic tastes of Boston’s coastal bounty right to your table.

Joe’s on Newbury also shines in delivering comfort food classics elevated with skill and heart. George Vernau’s favorite, the Prime Rib French Dip, features tender slices of prime rib tucked inside a soft roll with a flavorful jus, providing a satisfying richness that lingers pleasantly. For a sweet finale, the Seven-Layer Chocolate Cake and the warm, gooey Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie offer indulgent finishes that perfectly round out the meal.

The menu thoughtfully caters to a variety of dietary preferences with several vegetarian and allergy-friendly options, ensuring there’s something delicious for everyone. Ghada highlights the fresh and crunchy Caesar salad, a well-portioned quinoa salad, and the generous kids’ pasta, all prepared with care and attention. Even with a packed dining room, the warmth and attentive service shine through, making the experience feel personal and genuine.

All things considered, Joe’s on Newbury stands out as a vibrant destination for anyone craving rich, soulful American fare in the heart of Boston’s iconic Newbury Street. This is the place to eat when you are on Newbury Street. The calamari is maybe the best I've ever had. Their version of meatloaf is fantastic. Service was great as well.

I really enjoyed my meal here at Joe’s. We had a short wait and were seated at the edge of the restaurant right by the sidewalk with the air flow from outside. This made for a pretty comfortable atmosphere. We received great service throughout our meal; we weren’t pressured to order quickly, and the bread brought to us was soft, especially with the butter. I ordered the Prime Rib French Dip, which was delicious; the bread was soft, the meat was cooked well, and the au jus gave this sandwich some great flavor. The fries that came with the meal were lightly salted and tasted good. My father had the fish and chips, which was a bit crumbly (the fish) but still decent. My mother enjoyed her California Crab sandwich, which consisted of cold crab on top of sliced avocados and shaved cucumbers on a garlic roll. My little brother had some Parmesan buttered noodles, which made for a generous portion even though it’s on the kids menu (he had been worried that it wouldn’t be enough food, but it turned out to be plenty). Kids get a free sundae after their meal, and my brother liked his vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. I personally had a wonderful experience, especially when considering the French Dip.

Great place for a dinner. Tha ambiance at downstairs is very good if you prefer not to be on the street. Lobster was a fun attraction, nachos were acceptable, but the creme brule for a finishing touch was very delicious.

Lovely restaurant with large menu and many great food options for vegetarians and vegans Cesar salad was delicious with nicely crunchy crotons, quinoa salad was great and portions are quite good too. Kids pasta was perfect and portions were very generous Scampi pasta was also great. Overall food is great. The seating was a bit uncomfortable and the restaurant was crammed with people which made it difficult for those of us sitting by the bar or the side tables as it’s too narrow for people to go in and out

Me and my friends ate here for lunch, and I waited 35 minutes to be seated. When we were seated, we got a table near the open kitchen. Plus, the bathrooms are nice, modern and clean. Spinach and artichoke dip($18) - chips are crunchy and warm but some chips on the bottom are stale, nice amount of dip Pan-Roasted Salmon' ($27) - the salmon was a bit too salty for my taste but when combined with the rice and lemon butter sauce, was a little bit better than normal. The jasmine rice was normal nothing to write home about, asparagus is a bit thicker than the normal slimmer ones I usually eat. Overall, the atmosphere here is great and looks are 10/10 and I don’t think I’ll come back for the salmon.

We had the best experience ever! Our server, David, was incredibly kind and thoughtful. He gave us great recommendations and paid attention to every detail. Pedro was also very helpful and attentive. The food was delicious, but what we loved the most was the amazing service and the positive energy from both David and Pedro. We totally recommend this place!
